For students who are international and whose primary language isn’t English, writing a college essay isn’t easy.

However, English competence isn’t all when it comes to writing properly. Even native English natives may struggle to write without proper guidance.

Maurice Boissiere, lecturer and adjunct professor of English writing at The University of Maryland, confirms this belief.

“I have taught international students who scored A’s on their essays , as for local students who have failed their classes,” Boissiere shared. “Really what’s important is to have questions.”

These questions aid in defining what is the primary idea or topic of the essay. This is called a prompt.

Format, style and function

What are the most important questions to ask yourself prior to writing an essay? Boissiere advised all students to ask questions about the style of writing that they write in, their format and the reason for writing.

Style, he explained, defines whether the essay is research paper, position statement or an opinion piece, or an essay that summarizes. You are trying convince the reader of a position? You are presenting information that has been thoroughly researched about the subject? Summing up a situation or occasion? They all have different approaches in the style of writing they use.

Format is the preferred style of writing an essay and is referred to as Modern Language Association (MLA); American Psychological Association (APA) style, used mostly in scientific papers. Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS).

The purpose, he stated, is key to formulating an effective thesis. It means the author should be aware of what they’re writing on and not be able to wander around an area of interest aimlessly.Read about cheap essay writing help At website

Precision, concision, proofreading

Following the answers to these questions you should follow these three steps to ensure that your essay is professional in its writing.

The first step is to be precise which means to speak clearly.

“When I see words and expressions that are a bit convoluted it’s a massive red flag,” Boissiere said. “There there is absolutely no point in speaking in a professional manner if your reader does not understand what you’re explaining.”

Another tip is precision in expressing ideas concisely.

“Writing is really thinking. If you’re unable express what you’re trying across, it indicates confusion or ambiguity in your reasoning,” Boissier said.

Last but not least, ensure an individual — most likely a native speaker — will proofread your essay before you print your final version. Don’t submit your essay that has punctuation, spelling as well as grammatical or printing errors.

As you edit and write elements that appear strange or out of place to your American peers, you’re actually learning more about U.S. culture.

“I always strive to assist international students proofread their writing when they require it. This is my job here.” said John Pugh, graduate student and teacher assistant in the English Department.

“Cultural differences could be a problem for international students who may not be experienced in critical thinking. Writing can certainly help with that,” he added.

Last but not least, Boissiere said, not enough students seek out help.

“I have office hours every week to help with a specific reason,” Boissiere explained. “But I don’t have many students coming to me with questions.”
